| A
benign tumor growing from the insulating cells (schwann cells) of
the peripheral nervous system. They commonly affect the eighth
cranial nerve, and are known as acoustic schwannoma's, or (incorrectly
) as acoustic neuromas. The reason this is incorrect is that
the tumor is not of the nerve cells (as neuroma implies), but of the
schwann cell, but the term acoustic neuroma has been used for
so long that the name has become accepted. |
