disease occurs most frequently in Japan, and is the progressive and
spontaneous occlusion of one or both internal carotid arteries at
the base of the skull. Other small arteries increase in size
to give the blood an alternative route (collateral circulation), and
these vessels appear on an angiogram as a puff of smoke (moyamoya
is the Japanese word for "puff of smoke"). |
