Magnetic resonance spectroscopy is a method of
using the magnetic resonance scanner to gain information about the
chemical makeup of tumors. An analysis of different voxels (cubes
of brain tissue) is done, and depending upon the relative amounts
of chemicals such as amino acids, acetate, choline and lactate, fingerprints
of brain, tumor or abscess may be seen. This allows a type of
fingerprinting to be performed to characterize a tumor.
