| Increased
cerebrospinal fluid within the ventricles of the brain. There
are two main categories, communicating and non-communication.
In the communicating variety, all the ventricles are enlarged, and
the problem lies at the arachnoid granulations through which spinal
fluid normally is reabsorbed into the blood. They may be blocked
as the result of subarachnoid hemorrhage or infection. In the
non-communicating variety, the lateral and third ventricles may be
dilated, with a normal 4the ventricle. This may be due to blockage
of the aqueduct of Sylvius (which connects the third and fourth ventricles),
by a tumor or some other undefined cause. |
