| When
the soft nucleus pulposus present within the center of the disc, and
bound by the annulus fibrosis, extrudes out of the confines of the
annulus, this is known as a herniated disc. Terms such as herniated,
bulging, extruded, slipped, protruding, and ruptured have been used
interchangeably and inconsistently in the literature. Herniated
discs often compress nerve roots within the spine, and cause pain
in the sensory distribution of the root, often down the leg or arm. |
