dorsal root entry zone lesion (drez lesion)
The region where sensory nerve rootlets enter the spinal cord is the dorsal root entry zone (drez).  For certain types of pain, creating a lesion in this area of the cord may improve pain.  Types of pain which may be benefited include pain from avulsed or torn nerve roots, pain from spinal cord injury, and phantom limb pain from an extremity which has been amputated.
