A bone growth stimulator is used to help promote the growth of bone across the lateral aspects of the spine, and is placed over the transverse processes (portions of bone which stick out from the vertebral bodies).  By providing a small steady stream of electricity from a small battery implanted under the skin, the bone growth stimulator helps to promote bone growth.  Here the stimulator is seen as a twisted wire.
