neuroma is actually named incorrectly. It is a tumor which arises
from the superior vestibular nerve, which is a part of one of the
cranial nerves which is responsible for balance. It often presents
with hearing loss, tinnitus and difficulty with balance. The
reason this tumor is incorrectly named is that the term neuroma would
imply that it grows from the nerve cells, whereas it actually grows
from the Schwann cells, which are insulating cells. These tumors
are benign. Growth rates of these tumors is somewhat unpredictable. |
